(for picture books & illustrated books)
I = Illustrations
How effective are the illustrations in telling the story or enhancing the text? Do they convey mood, character, or setting clearly? Are they central to the storytelling (especially for picture books)? Are the visual details engaging or memorable?
M = Message
What is the book trying to do or say? Does it succeed? Are the themes or lessons clear without being heavy-handed? Does it inspire thought, reflection, or discussion? If its purpose is simply to entertain, does it do so effectively?
A = Artistry
Is the writing style engaging, clear, beautiful, clunky, awkward? For picture books: is it rhythmical, fun to read aloud, playful, preachy? Does the text complement the illustrations effectively? For illustrated books: were the characters vivid, layered, believable? Did they grow or change? For picture books: were the characters relatable to children?
G = Growth
Did I learn something or gain a new perspective? Did the book foster emotional growth, empathy, or understanding? Would children or adult readers take something meaningful from it?
E = Enjoyment
Did I enjoy reading the book? Was it fun, moving, or satisfying to experience? Did the illustrations enhance my reading experience or distract from it? Would I read it again or share it with someone else?
